Product CN-8301 - 10Base-FL 32-Bit EISA NIC with ST/SMA Connectors
Overview

The CodeNet-8301 is a 32 bit 10BASE-FL Ethernet network adapters for the Extended Industry Standard Architecture (EISA) bus. The board is a state-of-the-art bus master design that uses the host system main memory directly When receiving or transmitting packet data or during buffer management, the CodeNet-8301 requests the EISA bus from the host system. Linked-list buffer management maximizes flexible memory management and provides efficient data packet processing in system memory by eliminating the need for intermediate copying of packets. The direct placement of data into system memory increases throughput while reducing CPU bus bandwidth utilization. In fact, the high-speed interruptible DMA design of the CodeNet-8341 typically consumes less than 5% of the CPU bus bandwidth. EISA users can take full advantage of the inherent speed and power of i386, i486 and Pentium EISA computers in a fiber optic Ethernet network. For total software compatibility the CodeNet-8301 supports both EISA (slot specific) and ISA compatible I/O addressing. The ISA mode should only be used for software compatibility with ISA drivers.
CodeNet-8301 EISA adapter provides a high performance, fiber optic link to an Ethernet network segment, based upon the IEEE 10BASE-FL standard. which is backwards compatible with the earlier Fiber Optic Inter Repeater Link (FOIRL) IEEE standard. It is completely immune to electromagnetic noise and no form of cable damage, like short circuits, ground faults, reflections, or impedance mismatches, can disable the network. Fiber optic networks provide unparalleled security. Workstations can be up to 4 kilometers apart in both point to point configurations. CodeNet-8301 10BASE-FUFOIRL cards are compatible with other FOIRL or 10BASE-FL products and can be used with other manufacturers' concentrators and repeaters.

Features

  • Connects an EISA computer to any 10BASE-FL or FOIRL Ethernet network.
  • Bus Master with 32 bit wide data path.
  • Uses the 33 MB EISA bus transfer rate for maximum throughput.
  • Software support for popular network software systems, including: Novell NetWare 386, Microsoft LAN Manager (NDIS), Windows for Workgroup, Windows NT, Novell's UnixWare, Solaris 86, IBM's OS/2, SCO and Banyan Vines.
  • Computers can be more than 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) apart.
  • Fully compatible with the IEEE 802.3 10BASE-FL and FOIRL standards.
  • Link Integrity indicator and optical "idle" signal enhance data integrity, simplify problem resolution and allow simple measurements of transmitter power for testing cable links.
  • Multiple LED indicators for network trouble shooting.
  • Operates in all computers using the EISA bus.
  • CodeNet-8301 10BASE-Ft-/FOIRL adapters are compatible with other FOIRL or 10BASE-FL products and can be used with other manufacturers' concentrators and repeaters.
  • Linked-list buffer management maximizes flexible memory management and provides efficient data packet processing in system memory by eliminating the need for intermediate copying of packets.
  • The direct placement of data into system memory increases throughput while reducing CPU bus bandwidth utilization. In fact, the high-speed interruptible DMA design of the CodeNet-8301 typically consumes less than 5% of the CPU bus bandwidth.
  • Optimizes network performance of 386, 486 and Pentium based computers
